FASTING FOR JESUS
It has been quite some time since I have talked about or written about fasting. As we have been participating in a 21 day fast with our church, Holy Spirit has been emphasizing something to me. He has been emphasizing that Jesus is worthy of the fast. That he alone is worthy of us denying ourselves. When Jesus becomes WHO you fast for instead of WHAT you fast for it sheds a whole different light on your fast. This actually can be applied to any area of our life where something needs to decrease and he needs to increase.
Can you see him worthy of the denial of something that your flesh or own will wants?

Picture this.
You’ve committed to a fast and one day you are tempted to partake in something that you are fasting from. This is not a legalistic thing so of course you could partake but what would it benefit you to partake for a moment as opposed to abstaining and receiving the reward of him? You most likely will be convicted if you partake, but there’s grace to get right back to the place where you left off.
But what if that thing that you were tempted with was side-by-side with Jesus, and in the moment you had to choose the temptation or Jesus.
Which would you choose?
I know that seems drastic, but I’m trying to simplify it for you to understand that Jesus is worthy of denying yourself something for a few days out of your whole year. You do it for him and he is actually your great reward. But most of all HE IS WORTHY of your fast!
When I was on an extended fast in 2015 Holy Spirit taught me something about what fasting does. Up until this point in my life it was a ritual. We did it yearly with our church. Didn’t fully understand the spiritual components of it or the benefits of it. It was something we entered into as a tradition, and most people looked at it as what you were giving up as opposed to what you were gaining.
But in the season of 2015 I began a greater pursuit of deliverance and healing. the Holy Spirit taught me that fasting starves what needs to die and feeds what needs to thrive. Yet we cannot do this in our own strength. I need, and you need, the Holy Spirit to empower us to be able to enter in to a holy supernatural fast. I will tell you, God understands life, our weaknesses, and he is patient. Yet he knows what is best for us so he will encourage us and also challenge us. But he will never make us do something.
Most people fast to get something from God, but what if we did it simply for God? Simply to give him higher place in our hearts and lives.
What if we took ourselves completely out of the equation of fasting other than being the vessel that hosts the fast for God. It’s not just about abstaining, but more about his sustaining us. This is an ultimate denying of self.
Mind you, I am not new to fasting and I actually have a supernatural grace to do it beyond the gift of ‘self control’. I actually love to fast because of the benefits of it for our whole person- spirit, soul, body. I love it even more because of how pure and close to God I feel when I fast.
Yet, we are still human and God knows our limitations and our weaknesses. There is grace for that, but we must give the effort with His help and guidance. It is a continuous cycle of becoming like Him.
Some fasts are not as easy depending upon the season. This little perspective shift I’ve had this week regarding fasting has helped me continue to put him in the rightful place, denying myself and glorifying God.
It may be the church that invites you into the fast, but can I propose to you that is actually the Holy Spirit inviting you into the fast because he desperately sees what he still needs to produce in you and through you. And most of all he wants to be close to you!
Simply put, I feel closer to God when I fast. There is something so holy about it you have to do it to experience it.
I propose to you today that he desires for you to see that he alone is worthy of a fast. He alone is worthy of denying ourselves. Don’t do your fast to get something from God. Do your fast for God!
I bless you with the supernatural grace to fast this season.
I bless you for a perspective shift to see Jesus worthy of denying your flesh.
I bless you with incredible encounters as you experience your savior and King.
I bless you and your endeavors to become more like him.
